The Dow Jones hitting 20K on January 25 was quite a moment. Not only was it the first time in its history (and that would be since 1896) that the Dow has been so high, its ascent during today’s rough political climate signifies hope and confidence in our economy. You could almost hear the collective roar of cheers across the nation—from the floors of the exchange and throughout the living rooms and work places of many Americans.
But, what does it mean, really? “The Dow Jones hit 20K.” How has that affected your retirement plans and/or your other investing accounts that (hopefully) generate income?
Is 20K just a number? A psychological state of intangible excellence and hopeful dreams? The reality, according to an article in MarketWatch, is this number signifies the performance of only about 30 from thousands of other stocks that represent the entire equity market. So, while the Dow is revered, there is a much broader market to contend with and consider at the end of the day.
Many factors play into the importance of the performance of the stock market. So, while we should definitely bask in the excitement in the heat of the moment, savvy investors clearly understand that in order to be successful when you’re riding the highs and lows of the market—buckle up. You’ve got to be in it for the long haul and make sure your portfolio holds assets that can offset market lows.
Diversity is critical in any investment portfolio. It’s why many people use self-directed IRAs to invest and build retirement income. It’s why many people invest in real estate, gold, private lending and other non-traditional assets to earn income. No one wants to lose it all on just one investment. But, the stock market is such a hot topic right now. You should arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can. Whether you invest in stocks or not, you want to stay on top of investing news in order to refine your own strategy in the months and years to come.
With that being said, here’s a list of some of the best, most recent articles we’ve read at Advanta IRA that explain the Dow numbers, global market trends, the current state of our economy, and how President Trump’s first days in office have impacted these numbers.
