An article published in July by Bloomberg reports, “Almost 19 percent of people 65 or older were working at least part-time in the second quarter of 2017, according to the U.S. jobs report released on Friday. The age group’s employment/population ratio hasn’t been higher in 55 years, before American retirees won better health care and Social Security benefits starting in the late 1960s.”

Many older Americans work past 65, even if part time, because they want to according to a recent Gallup survey. But, others may be forced to work during their golden years to meet financial needs. That doesn’t sound so golden, does it?

Deciding to work past retirement age should be a choice, not a necessity. And, you do have choices. If you make a few changes, you may be able to boost your retirement savings by adding critical diversity in your portfolio.

How? By self-directing your retirement plan and using The Advanta IRA®.

The average retirement account involves a broker or financial advisor who makes traditional investments for you (think heartless stocks, lackluster bonds and mutual funds). In comparison, self-directed plans operate at the sole discretion of plan owners (that’s you!) who can choose alternative assets they know and understand.

Alternative investments have the potential to build wealth at a faster pace and/or create higher or more stable returns over the course of time. We all know that no investment is a guaranteed winner. But, self-direction gives you the power to control your retirement funds and the freedom to choose your own assets. The additional ability to eliminate investments that are not providing a desirable return and replace those with other possibilities is powerful. Within this strategy you may find answers on how to avoid working past retirement age.
